The body is a gift, a means of resistance, a site of making art, and a display of power.

We study issues of racial justice related to local and global experiences of health, fitness, leisure, and sport.

The IDEAS Research Lab has 4 main priorities:
Indigeneity, Diaspora, Equity, Anti-racism in Sport and the moving body.

Inclusivity is our thing.

The IDEAS Research Lab is an interdisciplinary team comprising graduate students, research assistants, and post-doctoral associates. We work on research, mentorship programs, embodiment groups, and trainings in the areas of leadership and learning about equity, anti-racism, post-/de-coloniality, racialized women’s health, and 2SLGBTQ inclusion. We are funded by local and national agencies. The lab’s researchers come from myriad backgrounds and bring their unique and rich social and cultural values to uphold the lab’s core priority: advancing social justice and otherwise thinking in physical cultures. We believe we have to start by naming the legacy of land expropriation and genocide, the pain and devastation of chattel and domestic slavery, and the exploitation and devaluation of racialized people if we are to transform Canada into a place where all people can realize their ancestors’ dreams.

From concepts to real steps.

Dr. Joseph's outreach is to sport and health institutes and organizations for consulting, education, research, presentations, and workshops. The objective is knowledge translation from theory and participant stories to practical application and equitable transformation of society.
